FAQ Building & Installation

Which seal do I need for a watertight cable or pipe penetration through a foundation?

IBMO advises the right watertight seal based on cable or pipe diameter, opening size, sleeve diameter and groundwater pressure. For high water pressure, a pressure seal is usually the best choice. For lower water exposure, Link-Seal or Uni-Seal seals can be suitable.

Are the seals also gas-tight and airtight?

Yes. IBMO supplies watertight, gas-tight and airtight seals for cable and pipe penetrations in foundations, basements, technical rooms, utility buildings and industrial buildings.

Can multiple cables be sealed through one opening, borehole or sleeve?

Yes. IBMO supplies sealing systems for multiple cables or pipes through one opening, borehole or sleeve. This provides a safe and watertight seal for foundations, basements, technical rooms, data centers and industrial installations.

Can watertight seals be supplied custom-made?

Yes. IBMO supplies custom-made pressure seals and watertight sealing solutions for standard and non-standard openings, boreholes, sleeves and cable or pipe diameters.

Can I use a cast-in sleeve or cast-in provision instead of a borehole?

Yes. In new-build and precast concrete projects, IBMO cast-in sleeves and cast-in provisions can be installed instead of drilling afterwards. This creates a clean, fast and watertight cable or pipe penetration.

Which fire-resistant seal do I need for cables, pipes or cable trays through a fire-rated wall or floor?

IBMO supplies fire-resistant seals for cables, pipes and cable trays through fire-rated walls and floors. The right solution depends on the penetration type, construction and required fire rating or standard.

FAQ Marine & Offshore

Which certified fire-rated sealing system is suitable for cable and pipe penetrations on ships, FPSOs and offshore platforms?

The IBMO Multiple Profile System (MPS) is a MED-certified sealing system tested in accordance with IMO Resolution A.754(18) for multiple cables and pipes through decks and bulkheads. The MPS is available for A-0 and A-60 classified penetrations. For single and multiple pipe penetrations, IBMO supplies Flex Fire Seals for A-0, H-0, J-90 and J-120 applications.

Which IMO, MED and fire classifications are required for marine and offshore cable and pipe penetrations?

The required classification depends on the deck or bulkhead type, fire zone and possible fire scenario. The IBMO MPS system has been tested in accordance with IMO Resolution A.754(18) and is MED-certified for A-0 and A-60 classifications. Flex Fire Seals have been tested for A-0, H-0, J-90 and J-120 applications.

Is the fire-rated cable and pipe penetration seal watertight and gastight?

Not automatically. Fire resistance, watertightness and gastightness are separate performance characteristics that must be demonstrated through testing. IBMO sealing systems can combine these properties, providing protection against fire, water and gas on ships, FPSOs and offshore platforms.

How can a cable and pipe penetration seal be installed quickly and without installation errors?

Select a sealing system with a minimum number of components and no time-consuming peeling of layers. The IBMO MPS system requires only one profile type, regardless of the cable or pipe diameter. No layers need to be peeled, reducing installation time and preventing errors caused by incorrect peeling.

Which technical information and certificates does an engineer need to specify a cable or pipe penetration seal?

An engineer requires the deck or bulkhead type, opening dimensions, number of cables and pipes, and required fire, water and gas-tightness ratings. The MPS system requires only one profile type, regardless of the cable or pipe diameter. The MED or Type Approval certificate, approved configurations, insulation requirements and installation instructions must also be checked.

FAQ Data Centers

Which fire-rated cable penetration (EI120, tested to EN 1366-3) should I use for cables running through a wall or floor in my data center?

The IBMO Fire Resistant Box is specifically designed for fire-rated cable penetrations in data centers, tested to EN 1366-3 and rated up to EI120 (120 minutes) of fire resistance, for duct sizes from 60 to 1000mm. The duct doesn't need to be coupled to separate boxes: it can simply run through the wall or floor or stop in front of it. Available in round and square versions, for both floors and walls.

Can I add more cables to a fire-rated penetration later without breaking anything open?

The IBMO Fire Resistant Box allows extra cables to be added easily without affecting the EI120 fire resistance. Nothing needs to be broken or cut open, and no repair work is required, unlike sealant or foam solutions.

How much does an EI120 fire-rated cable penetration cost per penetration point, and will it pay for itself?

The IBMO Fire Resistant Box pays for itself after a maximum of 2 cable modifications, since no costly rework of the EI120 fire seal is needed each time cables are added.

Is the IBMO Fire Resistant Box EN 1366-3 certified and suitable for the European fire-resistance requirements of my data center project?

Yes. The IBMO Fire Resistant Box is tested and certified to EN 1366-3, with a classification of up to EI120 (120 minutes), so the fire resistance of your cable penetrations is verifiable and project ready.
